How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take in Westchester County?
A complete kitchen renovation in Westchester County typically takes 12–22 weeks from first consultation through final walkthrough. This timeline is longer than many homeowners expect — and shorter than many homeowners fear.
The timeline breaks down into three phases: Design and Specification (4–10 weeks), Permitting and Material Lead Time (8–14 weeks, often overlapping with design), and Active Construction (6–12 weeks). With careful scheduling, permitting and cabinetry lead time can run in parallel with the latter part of the design phase, compressing the overall timeline.
Phase 1: Design and Specification (Weeks 1–8)
Week 1: Initial in-home consultation and showroom visit. The designer assesses your existing kitchen, takes preliminary measurements, discusses vision and budget, and begins developing the design brief.
Weeks 2–4: Design development. The designer produces a 3D rendering of your kitchen and assembles a preliminary material specification. This phase involves back-and-forth revisions on layout, cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and finishes.
Weeks 4–8: Design finalization and specification approval. Once the design is approved, the team produces a final material specification sheet, a written scope of work, and an investment proposal for your review.
Phase 2: Permitting and Material Lead Time (Weeks 6–16)
Week 6–8: Permit application submission. As soon as the design is sufficiently developed, Three Brothers submits the permit application to your municipality. This phase begins while you are still reviewing the final design.
Weeks 8–14: Permit review and approval. Standard municipalities in Westchester take 2–6 weeks for residential kitchen permit review. Scarsdale with ARB review may take 6–14 weeks.
Weeks 8–16: Cabinetry production. Custom cabinetry — Woodmode, Crystal — requires 10–16 weeks from order to delivery. Semi-custom cabinetry — KraftMaid, Showplace — requires 4–8 weeks. Cabinetry is ordered as soon as the specification is finalized.

Phase 3: Active Construction (Weeks 14–22)
Active construction begins once permits are approved and cabinetry is confirmed for delivery. The construction phase typically runs 6–12 weeks and includes:
Demolition (1 week): Removal of existing cabinetry, countertops, flooring, and fixtures.
Rough work (1–3 weeks): Structural modifications if required, plumbing rough-in, electrical rough-in, rough inspections.
Cabinetry installation (1–2 weeks): Delivery and installation of all cabinetry. This is the most visible transformation phase.
Countertop template and installation (2–3 weeks after cabinet installation): Countertop fabricator templates from installed cabinets; fabrication and installation typically takes 2 weeks.
Finish work (1–3 weeks): Backsplash tile, flooring, plumbing and electrical trim, appliance installation, hardware, punch list.
Final inspection and walkthrough (1 week): Municipal final inspection, final punch list, and homeowner walkthrough.
Frequently Asked Questions
A full kitchen renovation in Westchester County typically takes 12–22 weeks from the first consultation through the final walkthrough. Design takes 4–8 weeks; permits and cabinetry lead time run 8–14 weeks in parallel; active construction runs 6–12 weeks.
Cabinetry lead time is often the longest single element. Full custom cabinetry (Woodmode) requires 10–16 weeks from order to delivery. Three Brothers places cabinet orders as soon as specifications are finalized to prevent this from becoming the critical path.
Most homeowners remain in their homes during kitchen renovation, though it requires some planning. Three Brothers helps clients set up a temporary kitchen — typically a coffee maker, microwave, and mini-fridge in another room. The active construction phase (6–12 weeks) is the most disruptive period; some clients choose to travel for part of this time.
