Project Overview

A 1980s Fairfield Colonial had a kitchen defined by its limitations: a peninsula that blocked sight lines, a single run of cabinetry with no pantry, and a layout that put the cook with her back to the family room. The project brief was clear — open the space, add serious storage, and create a kitchen that worked for a family that truly cooked together every night. The result is a modern transitional kitchen that feels generous, calm, and entirely functional without trying to be something it is not.

Project Detail

Layout Strategy: Removing the Peninsula

The peninsula was the defining problem and the first thing removed. In its place, a 10-foot island now runs perpendicular to the main counter — positioned so the cook faces the family room while working. The island provides seating for four, a prep sink, and storage on both sides. Removing the peninsula also allowed us to relocate the refrigerator from a corner position to the end of the perimeter run, dramatically improving the work triangle. All plumbing was relocated during rough-in to accommodate the new island prep sink.

Cabinetry: KraftMaid Vantage with Custom Island

The perimeter cabinetry is KraftMaid Vantage in a painted Dove White — full-overlay doors with soft-close concealed hinges and full-extension dovetail drawer boxes. The island is a contrasting Graphite finish, distinguishing the work zone from the perimeter storage. Both runs go fully to the ceiling with crown molding, eliminating the standard gap above upper cabinets and significantly increasing storage capacity. A full-height pantry cabinet with pull-out shelving at the end of the perimeter run solves the original storage problem completely.

Countertops, Backsplash, and Hardware

The countertop is Silestone Calacatta Gold — an engineered surface with the veining character of quartzite without the maintenance requirements. The island is a bookmatched slab with a waterfall on one end. The backsplash is a simple stacked 3x12 white porcelain subway tile in a vertical stack bond — a clean choice that does not compete with the countertop pattern. Hardware is brushed nickel throughout — a deliberate, considered neutrality that ties white and graphite cabinetry together.

Common Questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Fairfield, CT?
Kitchen renovations in Fairfield, CT typically range from $75,000 for a focused semi-custom renovation to $200,000+ for a full architectural renovation with custom cabinetry. This layout-reconfiguring renovation with semi-custom KraftMaid cabinetry and quartz countertops ran $165,000 including all structural and electrical work for the new island.
Is it worth removing a peninsula and adding an island in a Fairfield kitchen?
For most active family kitchens, yes. An island with seating opens the kitchen to the adjacent living space, improves the cooking work triangle, adds prep surface, and creates a genuine gathering point. The layout change in this Fairfield renovation was the single decision with the greatest impact on how the family now experiences the space.
