Project Overview

New Canaan's architectural heritage — shaped by Philip Johnson, Marcel Breuer, and the Harvard Five modernists — creates homeowners with sophisticated design expectations. This renovation of a 1970s International Style home honored the existing architecture: flat cabinetry with no visible hardware, stone surfaces allowed to speak for themselves, and a rear glazed wall left entirely unobstructed by cabinetry.

Project Detail

Material-Honest Cabinetry

The cabinetry program is Crystal Cabinetry in a flat-panel, full-overlay configuration with no applied hardware — push-to-open Blum Servo-Drive mechanisms on all base and wall cabinets. The finish is a matte walnut veneer on the perimeter cabinetry and a matte white lacquer on the island. The hardware-free aesthetic is absolutely intentional — consistent with the architectural tradition of the home and the expectation of the New Canaan design community.

Stone Throughout: Nero Marquina and Taj Mahal

The island countertop is Taj Mahal quartzite — a warm, ivory-toned stone with subtle veining. The perimeter countertop and full-height backsplash is Nero Marquina marble — matte black with white veining — creating a dramatic but disciplined contrast. The combination of warm island against dark perimeter stone is a deliberate reference to mid-century design's love of contrasting material planes.

Appliances: Concealed and Panel-Ready

The refrigerator is a Sub-Zero 36-inch panel-ready column — fully concealed behind walnut veneer panels matching the perimeter cabinetry. The dishwasher is Miele, also panel-ready. The only visible appliances are the 36-inch Gaggenau induction cooktop set flush into the island surface, and the custom-designed stainless steel hood integrated into the ceiling soffit.
