Project Overview

A Westport Colonial on the Saugatuck River had a traditional kitchen that felt disconnected from the property's most valuable asset: the view. The renovation goal was to transform a closed, compartmentalized kitchen into an open, design-forward space with direct visual connection to the rear terrace and river beyond — while creating a serious cooking and entertaining environment worthy of the home.

Project Detail

Opening to the Outdoors

The rear wall of the existing kitchen contained a single 36-inch window. We replaced it with a full 9-foot pocket door system that opens the kitchen directly to the rear bluestone terrace. In warm months, the kitchen and terrace function as one continuous space. The sightline from the island to the river is now unobstructed — framed by the panel-ready Sub-Zero refrigerator columns that flank the opening.

Cabinetry: Showplace EverCore in Natural White Oak

The perimeter cabinetry is Showplace EverCore in a cerused white oak finish — a wire-brushed texture that emphasizes the natural grain of the wood while keeping the palette light and coastal. The island is painted in a muted sage (Benjamin Moore Comfort Gray) with an unlacquered brass toe kick and hardware. The contrast of the warm oak perimeter against the softly colored island grounds the space without competing with the river view.

Surfaces: Calacatta Borghini and Hand-Made Tile

The perimeter countertop is Calacatta Borghini quartzite — a natural stone with dramatic movement that can be sealed for kitchen use. The island top is a 3-inch thick honed White Macaubas quartzite with an eased edge. The backsplash is a hand-pressed ceramic tile from Heath Ceramics in a matte driftwood glaze — custom ordered in a 4x4 format. The tile tone bridges the white oak and the sage island perfectly.

Appliances and Fixtures

A 36-inch Wolf induction cooktop (chosen for the family's preference for the precision of induction) is set into the island, with a custom-designed hood above. Two 30-inch Sub-Zero column refrigerators flank the terrace opening. A Miele dishwasher is fully concealed behind a panel-matched door. A Franke farmhouse sink in a matte white porcelain anchors the perimeter run facing the terrace — with a Waterworks unlacquered brass faucet.
