Project Overview

A Wilton estate property — wooded lot, mid-century expanded farmhouse — had a primary bathroom unchanged since the late 1980s. The renovation brief was specific: full wet room conversion, materials from the natural world (stone, wood, unlacquered metal), and a spa experience that would make the homeowners feel no need to travel for wellness. Everything in this renovation was specified with Wilton's wooded character as a reference.

Project Detail

The Full Wet Room

The existing bathroom was reconfigured to create a full wet room — a continuous waterproofed environment where the shower, soaking tub, and floor are part of one seamless space with no enclosing glass wall. The shower area and freestanding tub sit on the same continuous floor plane of honed Noce travertine. Water is directed to a full-length linear drain channel that runs the length of the wet room. This approach maximizes the sense of open space while honoring the spa aesthetic the homeowners were seeking.

Natural Materials Throughout

The floor and wet room walls are Noce travertine — a warm walnut-toned stone with natural voids filled with complementary grout. The vanity cabinetry is teak — an outdoor-rated hardwood that performs superbly in humid bathroom environments without swelling or degrading. The countertop is a single piece of leathered Patagonia granite, a stone with pronounced movement in warm amber and cream tones that references the autumn foliage outside the bathroom window.

Steam System and Thermal Elements

A Mr. Steam CU steam generator serves the wet room with three steam nozzles positioned at strategic heights. The radiant heated floor system — Warmup mat with a touchscreen thermostat — is set into the travertine throughout the wet room and vanity area. An infrared sauna panel is built into one wet room wall, providing dual-mode wellness: steam or dry heat, at the homeowner's preference.

Common Questions

What is a wet room bathroom?
A wet room is a fully waterproofed bathroom where the shower area is open — there is no shower door or enclosure. The entire floor is sloped toward a drain, allowing the shower to be used without containing water within a dedicated enclosure. Wet rooms are common in European luxury homes and are increasingly popular in high-end Fairfield County renovations.
How much does a wet room conversion cost in Wilton, CT?
A full wet room conversion in Wilton, CT typically adds $8,000–$18,000 to a bathroom renovation budget versus a standard shower installation, due to the more extensive waterproofing required. This project totaled $95,000 including the wet room conversion, steam system, heated floor, and all finish materials.
