Cost Guide
What Affects Kitchen Remodel Cost?
The 7 factors that most influence what you'll spend — explained honestly by contractors who've been working in Westchester County since 2005.
Cabinet selection
The single biggest variable
Cabinets typically represent 30–40% of a kitchen remodel budget. Stock cabinets start around $5,000–$8,000 for a typical kitchen. Semi-custom runs $15,000–$35,000. Fully custom can exceed $60,000. The jump between tiers is steep — choosing stock vs. semi-custom is often a $15,000–$20,000 decision.
Layout changes
Moving walls, plumbing, or gas costs more
A kitchen renovation with no structural changes is significantly cheaper than one that moves a wall, relocates the sink, or runs new gas lines. Moving a sink 5 feet can add $3,000–$8,000 in plumbing costs alone. Moving a gas range requires licensed gas work — another $1,500–$4,000.
Countertop selection
Wide range: $40 to $200+ per sq ft installed
Laminate: $40–$60/sq ft. Quartz: $80–$150/sq ft. Natural stone (granite, marble, quartzite): $100–$200+/sq ft. A typical Westchester kitchen has 50–70 sq ft of countertop. That means the countertop decision alone ranges from $2,000 to $14,000+ for the same kitchen.
Appliances
From $3,000 to $25,000+ for a full suite
Builder-grade appliances (LG, Whirlpool) run $3,000–$6,000 for a full suite. Mid-range (GE Profile, Bosch) runs $6,000–$12,000. Luxury (Wolf, Sub-Zero, Miele) easily exceeds $20,000–$35,000 for a full suite. Many Westchester homeowners separate the appliance purchase from the renovation contract.
Demolition and disposal
Often underestimated
Removing old cabinets, countertops, flooring, and drywall costs $2,000–$6,000 in Westchester County, where disposal fees are higher than most markets. Unexpected issues discovered during demo (mold, asbestos, subfloor damage) can add significant cost.
Electrical and lighting
$2,000–$10,000 depending on scope
Under-cabinet lighting, recessed lighting redesign, new circuits for appliances — electrical work is frequently underestimated. Older Westchester homes (pre-1980) often need panel upgrades or new circuits before renovation can proceed.
Flooring
$8–$35+ per sq ft installed
Replacing kitchen flooring adds $3,000–$10,000 depending on material and square footage. Many Westchester homeowners extend the flooring through adjacent dining rooms and hallways, which increases cost but improves cohesion throughout the main floor.
